The roots of the BNP Paribas Group in Europe go down very deep indeed and our international vocation was marked out at a very early stage in our history by all the various banks that have joined forces over the years to form the Group as we know it today. The story of BNP Paribas in the Netherlands is a perfect illustration of this vocation.

Among our forerunner banks, Paribas was created from the merger of a French bank and a Dutch bank. Its original name, Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas, reminds us of this dual affiliation. The Amsterdam branch, which was an integral part of the Dutch financial markets, was for a long time the only French bank established in the Netherlands,

participating in numerous capital market transactions on behalf of French and Dutch client companies. It is also worth pointing out that the Amsterdam financial market occupied a notable position in Europe from the 18th century onwards, especially in the issuance of securities.

This book tells the story of the BNP Paribas Group in the Netherlands from 1863 to the present day, detailing the progressive rollout there of our global business lines. It also pays tribute to all our staff whose work helped to create our story in the Netherlands over the years and to those who continue to do so today.

Last but not least, this publication gives me the opportunity to highlight once again BNP Paribas dedication and commitment to supporting our clients and helping to finance the ongoing economic development of the Netherlands, while remaining true to the values which are embodied in the BNP Paribas brand and which give the BNP Paribas Group its strength.
